Mapping Receptive Fields in Space and Time

چکیده
complex signals in order to guide adaptive behavior. It follows that the response properties of neurons should reflect the dynamic nature of such signals. Recently, several studies have demonstrated the existence of time-varying receptive fields in the auditory, visual and somatosensory thalamocortical pathways. The characteristics of these receptive fields suggest that they are constrained by the need to actively interpret time-varying stimuli. Here, we review these studies, the possible functions of these receptive fields, and how they might be generated in the thalamocortical pathway.

Dynamic texture recognition using time-causal and time-recursive spatio-temporal receptive fields
This work presents a first evaluation of using spatiotemporal receptive fields from a recently proposed time-causal spatio-temporal scale-space framework as primitives for video analysis. We propose a new family of video descriptors based on regional statistics of spatio-temporal receptive field responses and evaluate this approach on the problem of dynamic texture recognition. Our approach gen...
متن کاملChapter 3 Dynamics of directional selectivity in MT receptive field center and surround
We studied receptive field organization of motion sensitive neurons in macaque middle temporal cortical area (MT) by mapping direction selectivity in space and in time. Stimuli consisted of pseudorandom sequences of single motion steps presented simultaneously at many different receptive field locations. Spatio-temporal receptive field profiles were constructed by cross-correlating stimuli and ...
متن کاملScale-Space Theory for Auditory Signals
We show how the axiomatic structure of scale-space theory can be applied to the auditory domain and be used for deriving idealized models of auditory receptive fields via scale-space principles. For defining a time-frequency transformation of a purely temporal signal, it is shown that the scale-space framework allows for a new way of deriving the Gabor and Gammatone filters as well as a novel f...
متن کاملEfficient Encoding of Natural Time Varying Images Produces Oriented Space-Time Receptive Fields
The receptive fields of neurons in the mammalian primary visual cortex are oriented not only in the domain of space, but in most cases, also in the domain of space-time. While the orientation of a receptive field in space determines the selectivity of the neuron to image structures at a particular orientation, a receptive field’s orientation in space-time characterizes important additional prop...
متن کاملPaucity of chromatic linear motion detectors in macaque V1.
The motion of a color-defined edge is often more difficult to perceive than the motion of a luminance-defined edge. Neurons subserving motion vision may therefore be particularly sensitive to luminance contrast. One class of neurons thought to play a critical role in motion perception is V1 neurons whose spatiotemporal receptive fields are oriented in space-time. We used the reverse correlation...
